Mangaluru: National Service Scheme of Swastika School, Mangaluru in collaboration with the Public Relations Council of India Young Communicators Club, Mangaluru Chapter, Rotary Club of Mangaluru City, Ladyhill Victoria Girls Composite P.U College, Mangaluru, JCI Mangaluru Samrat, and JCI Mangaluru Spoorthi, will hold a beach cleaning on Saturday, October 2 at 8.00 am in Panambur Beach to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti.

Chief Guest of the event will be C. A. Simon, Superintendent of Police, Anti-corruption Bureau, Western Range, Mangaluru. Commissioner, Mangaluru Urban Development Authority, and Mangaluru Deputy Director, Karnataka Tourism Development N. Manikya will inaugurate the function. Yathish Baikampady, former Chief Executive Officer, Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project will be the guest of honour.

Yathish Baikampady said that Beach cleaning has been a regular feature of this coast. We have been holding campaigns like this for over 20 years. “After monsoon, it is very important to involve every citizen and youngsters to clean the beach. It can have two benefits. The first is that it shows where the trash comes from, which is eye-opener for everyone when we go on a beach cleaning drive. Most of the times we think that beaches are filled with trash and it is thrown by local residents, but that is not true. 99 per cent of it is discharged into drains, rivers, and finally the sea,” he said.

He further said that during monsoon this trash will be thrown back to the land by sea. “We wouldn’t have any clean beaches on our coast if we didn’t clean this,” he added.

Cleaning is not the only solution. It also creates an awareness on finding the source and those who participate in beach cleaning will be aware of common mistakes and how to avoid them, he opined.

“Plastic is not bad, but it is not managed properly. My experience says that despite future campaigns like this people don’t learn and hence this will not reflect well on the City which could be alarming. The more trash that enters the sea, the more trash that is dumped carelessly. These young people who participate in beach cleaning will know what to do when they visit a mall or come across something that contains plastic,” he added.

Dr. Raghavendra Holla N., Chairman, PCRI Mangaluru, Canute J. Pinto, President of Rotary Club Mangaluru City, Malini Hebbar, Principal SNS, Maria Ujvala A.C, Principal Victoria Girls Composite P.U College, Tini Dcosta, President of JCI Mangaluru Samrat, Ananya Hegde, President of JCI Mangaluru Spoorthi, Vidhya Shetty, NSS officer, SNS and Manoj Rao, Secretary of YCC Mangaluru will be present for the event.
