Uppinangady: The local residents were panic-stricken when thick white smoke started emanating from a gas tanker after the valve of the tanker opened, on Monday morning at a place named Karvel here.
It is said that the tanker of ‘Total Gas’ was plying from Mangaluru to Hasan when the incident occurred. The valve had opened and the gas had started evaporating, unleashing fear among the locals.
Soon after the incident the National Highway was closed for traffic movement and announcements were made asking people to not light fire in the vicinity. The gas leak was brought under control after over an hour-long operation.
The locals said that despite the fire personnel having been informed, they reached the spot late and by time they arrived the situation was brought under control by the local police.
The locals of Uppinangay have seen many episodes of gas tankers turning turtle in the region and the Perne gas tragedy in 2013 has been etched in the minds of the people here. Scores of people had lost their lives in the gas tragedy that took place here.
