Mangaluru: The Karnataka Government informed the High Court that works on implementing the scheme for removing the solid waste stockpile that has amassed in the Pachanady landfill unit had begun after Chief Minister Basawarj Bommai gave his approval.

A division bench chaired by Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi was hearing a PIL filed by the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority following the 2019 disaster at Pachanady,

The court was informed by Additional Advocate General Dhyan Chinnappa, who represented Mangalore City Corporation, that Basavaraj Bommai had approved the project, and that the Commissioner of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) had issued a letter to the agency that had bagged the tender for the job on March 8.

The court was informed in September 2021 that the State Government had sanctioned an amount of Rs. 73 Crore for the project. The court took note of the delay in commencement of work, and the authorities concerned were taken to task for the lapse. The High Court reprimanded all of the authorities concerned, including the State Government, for their apathetic attitude, which it termed as shocking.
