Govt withdraws grants to school run by Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat’s trust

Mangaluru: After nearly a decade of providing financial grants to two government-aided private schools managed by the Sri Rama Vidyakendra Trust through the Kollur Mookambika Temple, the state government has decided to cancel the aid as per an order dated July 31,2017.

The schools in question – Sri Rama Vidya Kendra, Kalladka, and Sri Devi Vidya Kendra, Punacha – are being run by the trust led by RSS strongman Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat.

While the state government has cited that the grants were cancelled as per the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Act, 1997 (Rules 2002) wherein no temple is allowed to adopt a private educational institute, Prabhakar Bhat has claimed that the government was indulging in “hate politics” at the behest of district in-charge minister B. Ramanath Rai.

It may be recalled that the two leaders were engaged in verbal duels during the communal violence witnessed in Dakshina Kannada recently.

Bhat questioned why the government has now cancelled the grants when a sum of nearly Rs 2.83 crore had been granted by the Muzrai temple to these two schools in the last decade — from 2007-08 (during the BJP-JD(S) coalition government) to 2016-17, towards midday meals, textbooks and uniforms of students. Nearly 2250 needy students belonging to the economically backward classes will be effected with this government decision.

Prabhakar Bhat however ruled out pleading with the government to reverse its order adding that he will continue to help these students irrespective of whether government aid is received or not.

It is learnt that the two schools had been adopted by the temple as per the order of the then State government in 2007-08. The temple itself manages seven schools in Kundapur taluk in Udupi district. Of them, one is government aided and six are unaided, he said.
