Mangaluru: Besides the episcopal ordination and solemn installation of Most Rev Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, as the 14th Bishop of Mangalore Diocese, the newly appointed bishop had taken a new initiative of the green revolution.

The solemn rituals and observances were witnessed by thousands of people on Saturday, September 15, when Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, the newly appointed as the new bishop. No doubt, it was a nice moment for the people of Mangalore Diocese. But more important is the decision of newly appointed Peter Paul Saldanha, who has started a new initiative in order to promote greenery.

To commemorate the installation of Peter Paul Saldanha as the Bishop of Mangalore Diocese, he himself decided to contribute something to nature. Hence, he is planning to plant saplings in over 1000 schools and colleges and 124 parishes which falls under Mangaluru Diocese in the first phase. In the second phase, measures will be taken to disburse saplings to 2,48,860 Christian families of Mangaluru Diocese. Due to this unique step, Bishop had decided to launch a `revolution` in Parishes, christ educational institutions and christ families.

An effort to retain back the beauty

It is said that while Pope appointed Peter Paul Saldanha as the Bishop of Mangaluru Diocese, he asked Peter to give maximum importance to protect nature. It is known fact that Dakshina Kannada district was surrounded by lush greenery in olden days. However, the beauty of this district deteriorated over the years due to the urbanisation. In order to retain the beauty back, newly appointed Bishop has planned to create awareness among the general public about the need of protecting nature by disbursing saplings to them, asking them to plant it in their surroundings.

Forest department to extend its hand

The bishop had already approached the Forest Department for the saplings and it will be disbursed to all educational institutions, churches and houses soon. The forest department has already consented to provide the fruit-bearing saplings including coconut, mango, jackfruit, medicinal plants among others.

Usually, the bishop pays a visit to every parish church at least once in a year. During his visit, he takes maximum care to ensure the disbursed sapling has grown well. If at all sapling is cut or not grown well, then it will be replaced by a new one.

Sapling distribution to be conducted during every anniversary of ordination

Canara Communication Director Richard D’Souza when contacted, informed newskarnataka.com that while disbursing sapling to parishes, educational institutions and houses, priority will be given to coconut saplings which are being planted in parishes and houses. In future, saplings will be disbursed to parishes, educational institutions and houses during every anniversary of ordination”, he said and added that it was a small contribution to nature and an effort to retain the beauty of greenery.
