HM Bommai appeals organisations to postpone their meeting on CAA

Mangaluru: Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai has asked both district unit BJP leaders and Muslim Central Committee leaders to postpone their scheduled meeting with regard to Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA),  on Tuesday, December 31.

Bommai was in the city to conduct a peace committee meeting between both Hindu and Muslim community leaders.

Thanking them for their co-oepration, the Home Minister urged District BJP and Muslim Central Committee to postpone the dates that they had set for holding meetings on CAA.

While Muslim Central Committee had planned to hold protest meeting on January 4 against the CAA,  the district unit of the BJP had scheduled to hold awareness meeting on CAA on January 12.

Bommai told leaders from both factions that he has no objection to their programmes,  but it would still be good if they could postpone the dates so that the district could completely come out of the pain that recent violence had caused.

Speaking to the mediapersons after the meeting Bommai said, “ both leaders have agreed to my appeal and permission will be given to hold their protests after 8 to 10 days. No untoward incidents occurred in the district after the violent protest, to which I thank leaders of all community,” he said.

When asked about the decision of state government of withdrawing the compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the victims of police firing, Bommai said, “ as the names of victims have been listed in FIR, the government has decided to withhold the compensation. Compensation will be provided to the victims’ family members if their innocence is proved in the investigation,” he said and added that the government is planning to set a separate guidelines to provide compensation to the victims, in such circumstances.

Responding to a query on the proposal of identifying a separate place to stage protests, on the outskirts of the city, Bommai said that he would take a final decision in this regard after consulting with the Deputy Commissioner of the district and also elected representatives.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLCs Ivan D’Souza, Hareesh Kumar,  MLAs Dr Y Bharath Shetty, D Vedavyas Kamath, Hareesh Poonja, U T Khader, Sanjeeva Matandoor, S Angara among others were present.
