Mangaluru: The 14th edition of Alva’s Nudisiri 2017, an annual Kannada literary and cultural extravaganza organized by Alva’s Education Foundation kickstarted on Friday, December 1 with great gaiety and fervor.

Litterateur Dr CN Ramanchandran inaugurated the three-day Alva’s Nudisiri 2017 at Sundari Alva Campus.

Speaking after inaugurating Alva’s Nudisiri 2017, litterateur Dr CN Ramanchandran said, “Several people have defined ‘Pluralism culture’ that implies the co-existence of several sub-cultures within a given society on equal terms, maintaining the identities of each individual. It can be also defined as an ethical value”.
Stating that ‘secularism’ and ‘unity in diversity’ are the dimension of pluralism, Ramachandran said “Indian culture has emphasized on pluralism from earlier times.”

“The concept of pluralism is an ‘ethical value’. Threat for pluralism arises when it comes to ‘identity crisis’ and ‘acquiring the political power’. People of minority community live in fear of losing identity and people of majority community live in fear of losing power,” he added.

The Indian constitution has been imbibed by combining both the Unitary(of UK) and Federal (of US) systems and this has aided in giving a pluralistic culture to our nation.

He also said pluralism will continue to survive and prosper if people belonging to different faith, culture and languages search for the ‘hyphenated space'(how to leave in love care and respect) while keeping their differences aside.

Addressing the gathering well known film maker Nagathihalli said that the trend of branding those who do not sing our anthem as an anti-national is wrong. He, however said that one should take pride in singing both the national anthem and the state song since these songs identify/represent the culture and tradition of our land.

Nagathihalli also termed that mobile phones given their radiation properties pose a nuclear bomb like threat in today’s world. Moreover people seem to be spending more time on mobile phones, disseminating messages that would harm the peace and harmony in the society.

Further he went on to say that a person becomes a leader only when several people follow him in reality and not just in social media.

Alva’s Education Trust Chairman Dr M Mohan Alva presented the introductory note.

An exuberant procession consisting of more than 80 cultural aspects of India, Sri Lanka and Bhutan performed by more than 5000 artists marked the beginning of Alva’s Nudisiri. Karnataka’s Dollu Kunitha, Veeragaase, Kamsale, Yakshagana, Tiger Dance, Poornakumbha as also the Manipuri Dhol Cholom, Lambani dance, folklore of Rajasthan, Kuchipudi from Kerala representing various the varied Indian culture formed part of the procession.
