Mangaluru: The alleged murder of NRI businessman Bhaskar Shetty by his wife Rajeshwari had brought the controversial operation of their Hotel Durga International to the fore. The recent development of this case wherein Bhaskar Shetty’s family was interfering with the management of the hotel has led to a temporary injunction against it by the Third Additional court.

Bhaskar and Rajeshwari Shetty had a 50-50 share in the ownership of the hotel. After Bhaskar Shetty’s death, the ownership rights were passed on to his wife. Since Rajeshwari Shetty (Bhaskar’s wife) is in judicial custody for the alleged murder of Bhaskar, advocates in her favour had appealed for an injunction on the grounds that the deceased’s family had been interfering with the operations of Hotel Durga International.

According to a recent order from the court, Rajeshwari rightfully holds the power in running the hotel without interference from the other members of Bhaskar’s family. After the court had asked for Rajeshwari’s representation in the court regarding the same issue, advocate M Chidananda Kedilya took her side on the matter in the court.

Addressing a press meet on Wednesday, November 23, advocates who took a stand in the hotel ownership, M Chidananda, Arun Bangera and Arun Shetty mentioned that the land in which Hotel Durga International was built belonged to Rajeshwari. They further added, “A loan of Rs. 2.25 Crore from Karnataka Bank’s Adi Udupi division stands in financing the construction of the hotel which was built on the land which bears the name of Rajeshwari. Since Rajeshwari has full rights in running the hotel, she had issued a letter of authority to her mother Sumathi Shetty to run it in her absence.”

Giving an account of interference in hotel affairs the advocates said, “While Sumathi was taking care of hotel operations, Bhaskar Shetty’s family members interfered in the hotel matters every single day and took over the hotel by force. Sumathi immediately took the matter to the Principal Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate of First Class (JMFC) court to receive injunction against Bhaskar’s family members. The court heard the case and granted temporary injunction against the same.”

Rajeshwari’s sister Renuka Rai spoke to the media and said that all claims about the total value of Rs. 350 Crore to 400 crore owned by Bhaskar is false. “Recently, Bhaskar’s family members claimed that he had assets worth Rs. 350 Crore to 400 crore which is not true. In the Arab countries, most of the businesses that Bhaskar had are being run by his relatives and in those countries, it is impossible to own property”, she added.

Listing out the properties owned by Bhaskar and their value, Renuka said that the property in total is valued at Rs. 10 Crore and not more. “The Indrali house is worth not more than Rs. 2 Crore, Hotel Durga International is worth around Rs. 7 Crore, a gym in Udupi worth Rs. 1.5 crore and a building ‘Shankar’ worth Rs. 3 Crore are the properties owned. There is a loan of Rs. 6.5 Crore on all the properties put together”, she said and mentioned that Bhaskar Shetty’s family is misleading the police with false claims on property.
