Mangaluru: Former MLA Mohiuddin Bava has asked the public to join the massive protest scheduled to be held on January 4 in the city, against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) and to not take law into their hands while holding the protest.
Speaking to mediapersons here on Tuesday, December 24, Bava said that, while the CAA divides the nation on the lines of religion, the NRC would send the people to the refugee camps for failing to produce proper documents. As both laws would harm the people irrespective of caste and religion, every person needs to protest against it, he said.
Pointing out to the recent protests against the CAA and NRC, which led to a clash between the protesters and police, Bava said that there was no need to for the police to resort to firing while the protesters were peacefully expressing their displeasure over the government’s move. “But the police tried to suppress the protest by resorting to lathi-charge and firing. Even though the protesters did not possess any arms and carried out a peaceful protest, they might have turned violent after the police resorted to firing. If anybody had pelted stones or damaged public property, the police could have arrested them and taken legal action. Why did they kill innocent people?” he questioned.
Meanwhile, he asked the public not to take the law into their hands. “During the protest on January 4, we are demanding the withdrawal of the NRC and CAA. We will hold our protest peacefully and won’t take the law into our hands. If anybody holds violent protests, they are not fit to live in our land,” he said.
