Mangaluru: In the Kanaka Jayanthi celebration organised by the Dakshina Kannada District Administration at Town Hall, District In-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai advocated that the citizens grow out of the caste system.
Addressing the gathering, he said that Kanaka Dasa propagated the abolition of the caste system ages ago. “Even today, the Varna (caste) system remains internalised in the society and we must get it out of our system”, he added.
“Society cannot grow unless the caste system is completely removed since it has dug its clutches into all the aspects of life. Kanaka Dasa had advocated this during his time since he saw the real problems associated with the whole Varna system”, Rai said.
Speaking about the development programmes in the name of the saint, Ramanath Rai announced the plan of constructing Kanaka Bhavana and the allotment of land for the same. Various activities of the Kuruba community will be organised at Kanaka Bhavana. “There will be one circle of the city to be named after Kanaka Dasa”, he added.
A procession in honour of Kanaka Dasa was arranged by the members of the Kuruba community from Sharavu Mahaganapathi temple to Townhall.
