Kasaragod’s open defecation-free tag falls flat

Kasaragod: The district has been declared open defecation free district on October 9, but what is common is that people coming to Kasaragod and other places end up defecating in open just because there are no public toilets available. The helpless locals, especially women, children and traders are also facing problems due to the same.

Most of the public toilet, which are called ‘comfort stations’ have been locked up for reasons unknown and due to this people are seen answering nature’s call and sometimes even defecating in open.

The public toilet in new bus stand premises was locked one month ago. The e-toilet here has become only a model without any use. The situation is the same even in Kumbla, Badiyadka and Uppala bus stand.

The officials concerned say that since the water pumps have gone kaput, there is no water supply to these toilets and hence they have locked the toilets. But the locals are not ready to settle with this answer as they question as to why the City Municipal Council could not repair the spoilt pumps over last one week.

The prevailing situation has left people raising questions at the yardsticks under which Kasaragod district was declared ‘Sampoorna Swach’ and open defecation free district.
