Mangaluru: The issue of earmarking a total of Rs 15 Crore for modernising Kudroli slaughterhouse, under `Smart City` project echoed again during the general meeting of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) on Wednesday, October 31.

While the opposition party members objected to the proposal, the ruling Congress members defended the move of modernising the slaughterhouse under Smart City project. Though the discussion has consumed the maximum time of the meeting, there was no positive end to the discussion.

Soon after the meeting started, the issue was raised by BJP corporator Sudhir Shetty Kannur. He said that High Court of Karnataka has already ruled that slaughterhouse should not be set up inside the city limits, but it should be shifted to other area ensuring no residents living in that area. Sudhir Shetty also informed that the existing slaughterhouse at Kudroli has been illegally functioning as the permission is granted by the Pollution Control Board (PCB) ended on January 2018. “As PCB did not renew its permission, there is no meaning in modernising the same slaughterhouse under Smart City project”, he stressed.

Meanwhile, JDS corporator Aziz Kudroli, Congress corporators Mahabala Marla, Shashidhar Hegde, Kavitha Sanil among others defended the move of modernising the slaughterhouse. “Modernising the slaughterhouse is a need of the hour. As getting hygienic food is the right of every citizen, one should not object to the proposal,” they claimed.

After nearly 90 minutes of discussion on the same subject, MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazir clarified that there is no meaning in discussing the issue of slaughterhouse as the deputy commissioner has already stated that the project of modernising the slaughterhouse cannot be withdrawn as the Smart City Project Board has already approved the project.
