Puttur: In a rather heart-wrenching incident, a lone septuagenarian was found dead at her residence at Haradi-Karadka here on Thursday evening. The locals say that miscreants had tied her up and then hacked her to death.

The deceased is 79-year-old Vinodini Kamath.

It is said that after her only daughter got married off, Vinodini was living all alone at her rented residence. However, on Thursday, when pungent smell started emanating from the locked house, the house owners grew a little suspicious and tried to find out the reason behind the smell. They were shocked to see the lone elderly dead inside the house.

When the police arrived and broke open the house, the dead body was found lying near the main door and her hands and legs were tied up. Even though, from an outset it looks as though she was strangled, the fact will be out with a probe.

The cupboard inside the house was open. The police suspect that this could have been a murder for gains.

Though Vinodini had gone to Bangaluru many years ago to live with her daughter, she returned because she could not adjust to the cold weather as she was asthmatic. Since then, Vinodini lived in Puttur and her daughter visited her once in a month of two.

Case has been registered.
