Mangaluru: Not waiting for an official announcement, the party workers in Dakshina Kannada celebrated the undeclared victory of Dakshina Kannada BJP candidate Nalin Kumar Kateel by bursting crackers on the streets, on May 23.

Kateel, who was elected to the Parliament from the constituency in 2009 for the first time, went on to get elected for his second term in 2014 LS election. If he tastes victory this time, it will be his third consecutive term as MP, representing Dakshina Kannada district.

Though he is considered to be an MP with a good percentage of attendance in the Parliament and interactions, many opined that there was high anti-incumbency in the constituency owing to his poor performance and also opposition from party workers.

However, proving all of these speculations wrong, Kateel managed to get a lead of 1,47,000 votes by afternoon. He bagged 4,60,216 votes and trounced his Congress opponent Mithun Rai, who bagged 2,82, 221 votes.

Nalin Kumar Kateel, speaking to newskarnataka.com said that there was a Modi wave in the previous election of 2014. Many said that the situation was not the same in 2019, but the election result has proved that the Modi wave is very much there and it has only transformed into a Tsunami. “The tremendous support of people on the NDA government shows that they have accepted the administration of Modi led union government. People have given a clear mandate to Modi as they think that the development and the protection of the country will be possible only by Modi,” he said

It may be recalled that the locals had condemned Kateel for the delay in Pumpwell flyover project.

Amid this, even before the official announcement of the results, victory banners and flex of BJP candidate Nalin Kumar Kateel were observed throughout the district.

UDUPI-CHIKKAMAGALUR
If anti-incumbency factor was spoken about openly and evidently then it was in Udupi-Chikamagaluru constituency. BJP’s Shobha Karandalaje had irked the voters due to her inaccessibility, said many before the elections. However, the results have shown that Karandalaje had a smooth walk to victory, defeating JDS candidate and former MLA Pramodh Madhwaraj.

Shobha bagged 1,80,616, while Madhwaraj bagged 88,925. The district BJP has planned a victory procession at 3 pm.

Karandalaje had previously said that she would win with two lakh margin.

Conceding defeat, Pramodh Madhwaraj tweeted, “When there is a wave in favour of Bjp all of us become helpless . Nevertheless voters are our bosses and they have given the verdict which I humbly accept without any bitterness. (sic)”

KARWAR

ananthwinMeanwhile, in Uttara Kannada district, it was a mere cakewalk for Union Minister Ananth Kumar Hegade. Taking on JDS candidate Anand Asnotikar, Hegade walked away with 5,22,900 votes, maintaining a huge margin of 3,29,615. Asnotikar bagged 193285 votes.

Hegade had been in news due to one or the other controversial statements from time to time. Ranging from changing the Constitution remark to questioning the birth of Rahul Gandhi, the Minister had been in news for wrong reasons. However, all of these negative news barely had any impact on the vote share.

Political pundits say that Asnotikar was never a strong candidate to take on a political heavyweight like Hegade.
