Mangaluru: The Additional Sessions Court and Fast Track Court for cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act sentenced a man to 12 years imprisonment after finding him guilty of kidnapping and raping a girl.

Mallik alias Mallikarjun Hanumanthappa (27) of Gadag District, who lived within the Kavoor Police Station limits, was found guilty. He was working as a coolie at the time. He used to live next door to the girl, and used to go to work with the girl’s father. He gained the trust of his friend’s 16-year-old daughter, promised to marry her, and kidnapped her in May 2017.

Mallikarjun took her to Goa, where he repeatedly raped her. She got pregnant and delivered the baby in a Goa hospital. The youth then ran away, leaving the girl and her child. He had threatened her not to disclose the matter to her parents.

After her parents filed a complaint with the Kavoor Police Station, a case was filed under the POCSO Act under the provisions of abduction, rape, sexual atrocity on minors, and thus the accused was arrested.

As per the reports, Assistant Commissioners of Police, Rajendra, Manjunath Shetty and Srinivas Gowda filed a charge sheet in the court.

According to the judge Savitri V. Bhat who handled the case, the charges have been proven. For several offences, the judge further ordered the accused to pay a fine of Rs. 1,05,000 to the court. If he does not pay, he will be sentenced to further jail time as specified in the order. The girl should receive Rs. 50,000 as fine, and the government should pay the victim Rs 2.5 lakh in compensation.
