Mangaluru: The City and the Diocese of Mangalore have lost a dynamic priest. Fr Edwin Cyril Mascarenhas, aged 57, the Principal of St Sebastian Pre-University and Degree College, Permannur, near Thokkuttu, in the outskirts of Mangalurru passed away on Sunday, 20 September after a brief illness. He was appointed Headmaster of St Joseph Institution in Bidar in 1999, and served as its Principal from 2001 to 2003, before being appointed Principal of St Antony Pre-University College, Naravi. In 2005, he was appointed Parish Priest of Anegudde and later served as principal of Permannur College, near Thokkuttu, in the outskirts of Mangaluru.
The funeral will be held at his home town parish-St Don Bosco Church, Kelmbet, Bolakodi in Karkala Tq. According to the parish priest of St Don Bosco church, the funeral services will be held today (Sunday, 20 September) at 4 pm, with the Govt.’s Covid19 gathering guidelines being strictly followed. Restrictions in place mean that around 150 persons will be allowed to attend the Funeral mass and around 20 allowed at his burial ceremony. The body will be kept for viewing from 2.15 pm at the Church, which will be followed by mass and burial services.
Fr Edwin was born on 9 July 1963, in Kelmbet, near Belman, to Maurice and Faustine Mascarenhas, and was ordained a priest on 7 May 1991. Having served as Assistant Parish Priest of Shirva, Omzoor and Bendore parishes between 1991 and 1997, he then took charge as Parish Priest of Petri.
