Mangaluru: Three accused in an attempt to murder case have been convicted by Mangaluru’s III Additional District and Sessions Court. Judge B.B. Jakati announced the verdict in the case on Friday September 9.
According to sources, a case was filed against the accused, Prasanna Kumar, Jayanthi Suvarna, and Raksha Suvarna, for the murderous assault on Vasantharaja Shetty in Kontadka of Niddodi village of Mudubidiri Taluk owing to a land dispute.
The incident happened when the trio forcefully entered Vasantharaj Shetty’s compound with weapons and assaulted him on the morning of February 28, 2020. Two eyewitnesses had testified against the accused in the case.
After hearing the evidence, the court decided that the prosecution had proved the accused’s guilt beyond doubt and convicted them.
Under section 447 of the IPC (criminal trespass), the convicts were each sentenced to pay a fine of Rs. 500 or serve one week in prison; 3 years ordinary imprisonment and Rs. 1,000 in fines under section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt); 6 months imprisonment under section 504 of IPC (intentional insult); 3 years imprisonment and Rs. 1,000 in fines under section 307 of IPC (attempt to murder).
The court ordered that victim Vasantharaj Shetty receive compensation in the amount of Rs. 6,000 from the fines collected.
Public prosecutor Narayana Sherigar U. argued on behalf of the government in the case.
