Mangaluru: Belthangady MLA case, weapon seized from accused

Mangaluru: Mobile phones, spanner rod from the car of the accused who had threatened Belthangady MLA Harish Poonja have been seized by the Police.

Superintendent of Police Hrishikesh Bhagawan Sonawane said, as per the primary investigation the incident occurred over the overtaking of vehicles and the police had not found any weapons in the vehicle that was seized. The accused had flashed a ‘L’ shaped weapon to the complainant, it had been learnt and the police now confirm that after investigation it was found that the seized weapon was the same as that of the one used by the accused.

The police had conducted a search in the house of the accused and also seized two mobile phone handsets.

Police said further investigation is on.

For an incident that occurred on Thursday October 13, one person was arrested on Friday October 14 for allegedly chasing the car of Belthangady MLA Harish Poonja and flashing a sword at his car in Bantwal. The accused has been identified as Riyaz (38), of Falnir in the City.

His Scorpio car had also been seized by the Police. The accused and the car were both identified by the complainant. It was Harish Poonja’s car driver Naveen who had filed a police complaint on the evening of Thursday October 13 evening at the Bantwal Police Station.

Earlier, Police Commissioner N. Shashi Kumar had said there was no criminal case registered against the accused in any police station and no weapon/sword was recovered from him. And it was purely case of road rage, he had added.
