Mangaluru: Belvai Butterfly Meet from September 2

Mangaluru: The Belvai Butterfly Meet 2022 will be held from September 2 at Sammilan Shetty’s Butterfly Park here. This is Sammilan Shetty’s Butterfly Conservation and Research Trust (SSBCRT) initiative to pique interest in and help people understand the role of butterflies in the natural world.

The key personalities who will be part of the event are Butterfly Man of India and Author of Butterflies of India Isaac Kehimkar, Dr. Milind Bhakare, Author of The field guide to butterflies of Western Ghats, V. C. Balakrishnan, Society of Environmental Education in Kerala (SEEK), Haneesh K. M., Founding Member of Bangalore Butterfly Club, Dr. Kalesh Sadasivan, Research Associate, Travancore Nature History Society, V. K. Chandrashekaran of Malabar Natural History Society, Kerala, A. Pavendhan, President of The Nature and Butterfly Society, Tamil Nadu, Ashok Sengupta, Founding Member of Bangalore Butterfly Club, Dr. Monsoon J. Gogoi, Scientist, BNHS, Assam and Rajendra Ovalekar, Founder of Ovalekar Wadi Butterfly Garden, Thane.

The first batch will start on September 2 and end on September 4, followed by the second batch from September 9 to 11, the third batch from September 16 to 18, the fourth batch from September 23 to 25, and the last batch from September 29 to October 1.

The programme highlights include walks in the butterfly park and foothills of the Western Ghats with Sammilan Shetty, encountering the exquisite butterfly fauna of the region. Participants can also interact and learn about butterfly behaviour, taxonomy and their conservation from some of the finest field experts of the country. There is also an opportunity to learn photography and film-making on butterflies.

The entry is restricted to a maximum of 20 participants per batch. The registration fee per person is Rs. 4,500 which includes stay, food and travel expenses from the campsite to the butterfly trails. A 20 per cent concession will be given to students.
