Mangaluru: Two women police officers, who arrested another person of the same name without arresting the real accused in the POCSO case and kept him in judicial custody for nearly a year, have been asked to pay a fine of Rs. 5 lakh from their pockets. The Second Additional FTSC POCSO Court has ordered that the compensation be paid.
Mangaluru Women’s Police Station Inspector Revathi and Sub-Inspector Rosamma paid Rs. 5,00,000 to the accused Naveen Sequeira. The judge ordered to pay compensation and also directed the Principal Secretary of the Home Department of the State Government to take legal action against the two police officers.
The accused has been identified as Poko Naveen under Mangaluru Rural Police Station limits. Based on the girl’s statement, SI Rosamma registered a case against Naveen under the POCSO Act and handed over further investigation to Police Inspector Revathi. Naveen Sequeira was arrested during the course of the investigation.
The victim, in her complainant and in her statement before the judge, had only mentioned the name of the accused, Naveen.
