Mangaluru: It has been three years since the work on the Kuloor River Bridge began and it has been four years since experts from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) reported that the old bridge was inefficient. With the monsoon approaching, there is a danger of rainwater receding into the Kuloor River bed area due to the huge amount of soil that has been put up for the construction of the river bridge, while on the other hand, there is the fear of the collapse of the old bridge. Hence, the CPIM’s Panjimogaru Zonal Committee on Saturday March 11 staged a protest near the Kuloor bridge demanding that the work should be carried out at the earliest.

Addressing the protest, Former Corporator Dayanand Shetty said that the work on the Kuloor Bridge works has been limping from three years and it should not become another pumpzwell.

DYFI State President Muneer Katipalla said that neither loczal MLA Bharath Shetty nor the MP were interested in the Kuloor Bridge works. There is news in the public domain that the work may have stopped due to commission, he said.

MLAs who put up banners about crores of rupees of work do not even know where the work is heading, he alleged.

He expressed concern over the danger of the collapse of the Kuloor Bridge, which is a very important link between Udupi and Mangaluru.

DYFI District President B. K. Imtiaz said the local MLAs are not interested in carrying out the work. “Even after 100 days of closure of Surathkal toll plaza, the toll booths there remain like skeleton,” he said.
