Mangaluru: Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada has created a new tradition of creating unnecessary controversy by issuing a Government order that declares holiday for schools and colleges under Mangaluru Commissionerate limits on Friday September 2, said SDPI Dakshina Kannada District General Secretary Anwar Sadat Bajattur.

In a press release, he alleged that though Government holiday for Ganesha Chaturdashi falls on Wednesday August 31, the District Administration’s decision to declare a holiday for schools and colleges on Friday in the name of Ganapati Visarjan was part of a conspiracy hatched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to gather people to the programme.

There is no specific day to immerse Ganapati and it is immersed on different days for about 10 days since the beginning of Ganesh Chaturthi. If the religious procession will gather crowd, will you declare a special holiday on the occasion of festivals of all the religions?, he questioned. If, as the District Administration itself has stated that there will be more crowd, then why is the Shobha Yatra allowed to take place on the day due to security concerns while the Prime Minister is arriving in the City? If it was mandatory to take out a Shobha Yatra on that day, would it not have been possible for the Prime Minister to postpone the programme, he stated and the District Administration should clarify whether there is ever a history of schools and colleges being closed in the name of Ganeshotsava, which has been going on in hundreds of places in Mangaluru for many years.

Fearing that fewer people may attend the public event of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, BJP leaders misused the power, put pressure on the District Administration and issued an order to make it compulsory for all of the Stree Shakti Mahila Sangathana to attend the programme. The Social Democratic Party of India condemns the stand of BJP Government to declare holiday as a build up to PM’s programme. Schools and colleges have already been closed for several days due to heavy rains this year. Now, if the BJP gives unnecessary leave for political purposes on flimsy grounds, it will have an adverse impact on the education of the students, he observed and demanded that the District Administration immediately withdraws the circular.
