Mangaluru: Hasiru Dala, Green Force picked up heaps of plastic waste accumulated on the river bank due to heavy rains. Loads of plastic were found on the side of boats docked at Phalguni River bank near Kulur in the City. The work of lifting the waste was carried out from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm on Thursday July 14.
Realising that all the plastic present there would go into the sea as the boats would venture into the sea, an urgent decision was taken at night itself and with the cooperation of the Mangaluru City Corporation, Forest Department and the allied organisations, the plastic accumulated were picked up.
Around eight wastepickers were appointed by the Hasiru Dala to segregate the garbage, that also prevented them from entering the plastic landfill on the spot yet managing to earn an income.
It was a new experience for the members of the Green Force to enter into the river donning life jacket and remove the plastic punishing their bodies.
Hasiru Dala, which means Green Force, is a social impact organisation that works with waste pickers and other waste workers to ensure a life with dignity.
