Mangaluru: In 2015, a suit was filed in the Karnataka High Court after a petition was made to the Mangaluru City Corporation and the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada in connection with the destruction of the agriculture land of local farmers Dileep Rai, Sanjeeva Poojary and Shekhar Poojary, due to the contaminated water emanating from the purification plant supplying water to Mangaluru at Thumbe Village in Bantwal taluk of the Dakshina Kannada District. The above aggrieved had complained to the Mangaluru City Corporation and the Deputy Commissioner in this regard, but still they have not got justice, said State Secretary of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha Hasiru Sena Manohar Shetty Nadikambalaguttu.

Mangaluru City Corporation had committed contempt of Court by not complying with the Court order despite it ordering to restore the land to the status quo. Another appeal has been filed with the State High Court in this regard, he said.

The lands of the farmers of Thumbe Village – Moideen, Lokaiah, Purushottama, Bhaskara, Gangadhara, Ramesh Bhandari, Anand Shetty and Devaki were washed away in the river and coconut and arecanut trees were also submerged and lost. Complaints were lodged with MCC and the Deputy Commissioner in this regard but it was of no use, he alleged.

A complaint has also been lodged with MLA U. T. Khader and when all efforts failed, a suit was filed in the High Court for justice. Therefore, the agricultural land of Dilip Rai and others should be repaired and restored as per the order of the High Court, he noted

He further appealed that the eight farmers who were affected by the vented dam should not only be given adequate compensation for the land that had been washed away but also should build a retaining wall for the remaining area and save the land.

At press conference, Bantwal Taluk Committee President of Raitha Sangha Hasiru Sena M. Subrahmanya Bhat, Office-bearers Sudesh Mayya, Victims Moideen, Dileep Rai, Lokaiah, Purushothama, Bhaskar, Ramesh Bhandari, Anand Shetty, Gangadhar, Sanjeev Poojary and others were present.
