Mangaluru: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has made it clear that compensation will not be given to the two victims who were killed in police firing during the recent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in the city, in case the two are found guilty of carrying out rioting activities.
Speaking to reporters in the city on Wednesday, on December 25 he said, “Even a single rupee will not be released if the probe proves the two guilty.”
It may be recalled that the protests against CAA turned violent in Mangaluru. In the melee, two persons lost their lives as police opened fire to control the stone pelters. Section 144 was clamped in the city for several days.
The general public had questioned the action of the police who gunned down Jaleel and Nausheen, the two youth during the protest. While many videos circulated have shown the police opening fire at the protesters, several other videos show that the police were forced to open fire to control the angry mob that attacked the police ruthlessly. Earlier, the state government had announced Rs 10 lakh compensation to each of the deceased. However, many had opposed the same and now, the CM has clarified that the compensation will be released only if the two are proven not guilty.
