Mangaluru: Police raids illegal sand mining sites

Mangaluru: Lokayukta police held raids at several locations in the District where illegal sand mining was reportedly taking place and seized assets worth Rs. 40 lakh, including vehicles.

According to sources, Lokayukta SP K. Laxmi Ganesh formed three teams under the leadership of DSPs Kalavati, B. Cheluvaraju, and Inspector A. Amanullah after receiving several complaints regarding illegal sand mining in the District.

Earthmovers, tippers, and other assets worth Rs 40 lakh were seized by the teams during their Friday raids in Mulky, Bantwala, and Belthangady. The seized assets were handed over to the respective police stations.

They said that three criminal cases have been registered against the offenders.

According to sources, there have been up to 25 complaints from the public regarding illegal sand mining.

Ganesh said that necessary action will be taken against the Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), the Pollution Control Board and the Revenue Department.
