Mangaluru: Ullal Taluk Sahitya Sammelana to be held on March 17

Mangaluru: Dhananjay Kumble announced that Dakshina Kannada District Kannada Sahitya Parishat Ullal Taluk Unit in association with Mangalore University will be conducting the first Kannada Sahitya Sammelana in Ullal Taluk on March 17 at Mangala Auditorium in Mangalagangothri.

District Sahitya Parishat President Dr. M. P. Srinath and the Expert Committee have selected Shyamala Madhava, a well-known litterateur and translator from Someshwara in Ullal Taluk, as the President of the conference. She is the daughter of Uchila U. Narayana and Vasanthi of Someshwara in Ullal.

Currently living in Mumbai, she has translated Hindi novel ‘Alampana’, English world literary works like ‘Gone with the Wind’, ‘Frankenstein’, ‘Jane Eyre’, ‘Wuthering Heights’, Ramayya Rai’s ‘Police Diary’, M. R. Pai’s ‘On one Common Man’ into Kannada. She has translated ‘Yatri’ into English.

Will Durant’s ‘The Story of Civilization’, a volume of Ambedkar’s writings and speeches, translated from Marathi to Kannada, have been published by the Kuvempu Bhasha Bharathi Authority. She has translated into Kannada the works of ‘Aa Loka’, an essay volume on ‘Baduku Chitra Chithara’, and ‘The God of Small Things’ by Arundhati Roy. The autobiography ‘Naale Innu Kaadide’ too has been published.

Apart from the Karnataka Writers’ Association’s H. V. Savitramma Award, Karnataka Sahitya Akademi’s Translation Award, S. V. Parameshwara Bhatta Awards, Kannada Sahitya Parishat’s Maharashtra Unit Honorary Award, Kuvempu Bhasha Bharati Authority Honorary Award of the Government of Karnataka and Honorary Award from the Department of Kannada, University of Mumbai.

Sahitya Parishat Secretary Ravindra Rai Kallimaru and Edward Lobo, Reception Committee Secretary Prasad Rai Kallimaru, Treasurer Lion Chandrahas Shetty Deralakatte, Ullal Hobli Sahitya Parishat President Vijayalakshmi Rai Kallimaru and others were present.
