Mangaluru: The recent decision taken by Mangaluru City Corporation to increase the self assessment tax by 15 percent has been severely criticised by veteran Congress leader B Janardhana Poojary. He reminded that the Congress had promised before the election that it would not raise this tax for five years after it got to power.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Poojary said that the decision to raise self assessment tax is a “breach of trust” of the people of Mangaluru by MCC. “It is the duty of the city corporation to keep up the promise that they had made as the people had voted for them with trust”, he added.
“The tax evaders who were not paying their taxes should be taken to task and the money that they owe to the government must be collected. By doing this, the MCC will not have the need to raise the tax by 15 percent. Collection of pending tax will not be hard for MCC with an effective mobilisation of resources rather than increasing tax”, Poojary opined.
