Mangaluru: The Indira Canteen intended to feed people from poor financial background, is facing an allegation of mismanagement.
A total of five Indira canteens are being operated in the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) limits and each canteen can serve 500 people per day, But, according to the sources, less than 100 people go to Indira canteen to have lunch in a day.
However, those managing the canteens claim money for 500 meals per day in order to earn additional income. The issue was raised during the MCC general meeting by Corporator Vijay Kumar on Wednesday, December 27. He sought a detailed probe into this issue stating that any government project should not be misused.
Of the total expenditure on food, the contractor recovers 25 percent directly from the consumer. The remaining would be given to the contractor by the government. In that the Mangaluru City Corporation would contribute 70 percent and the labour department 30 percent.
Following the allegation, Mayor Bhaskar K asked Commissioner Mohammed Nazir to look into the issue to ensure that there is no such mismanagement in Indira Canteens.
