Mangaluru: Sultan Battery is a popular tourist attraction in the City, although the road leading to it is in a state of chaos. Vehicles and pedestrians utilising the route must manage what is left of the roads. When it rains, the muddy roads exacerbate the problem that already exists.

Despite numerous promises, the road’s condition has deteriorated due to years of neglect.

Frustrated with the poor state of the road, local residents in the area have erected a banner to draw attention to their issue to the authorities. The banner, which is printed in Kannada, claims that only 10 per cent of the planned road improvement work has been done, and that commuters are facing problems.

“If the road in the heart of the city is in such awful shape, imagine the state of the roadways near tourist attractions on the outskirts. When laying the foundation stone for any project, our officials know simply to do ‘Guddali Pooje.’  They are never bothered to check on the status of the work after that,” the banner read.

People whose land was taken for road expansion work, have not been compensated for their loss, it added.

The banner says that it wishes to bring the plight of the people to the attention of the administration and people’s representatives, and warns that if the matter is not addressed, public protests will be staged.
