Mangaluru: The 10-day Dasara festival began in Dakshina Kannada District on Thursday October 7 with the temples and the surroundings dressed in the beautiful decoration. Despite the Covid scare, the preparations for the festival have been going on smoothly.

Famous temples in Mangaluru like the Kudroli and Mangaladevi temples are all decked up to celebrate this Hindu festival which symbolically celebrates the victory of good over bad. The Kateel Shri Durgaparameshwari Temple too is all set for traditional celebrations.

Since the covid pandemic has restricted the entry of large number of people to temples, all events including the inauguration, cultural events, and the Vijayadashami procession will be live-streamed. Arrangements have been made to use social media platforms to telecast the events on a real-time basis. The celebration will be held by following all the Covid guidelines shared by the government.

Evidence suggests that the festival of Dasara began was first observed in Karnataka State by the Vijayanagara Empire kings in the 15th century. Celebrations range from worshipping Durga, lighting up temples and major forts such as at Mysuru, to displaying colourful figurines. Mysuru City has a long tradition of celebrating the Dasara festival with grandeur and pomp to mark the festival. Every year, a grand procession of the Goddess Chamundeshwari’s idol atop an elephant is taken out from Mysore Palace through the streets of the City. Special pujas also take place at the Chamundi hill that can only be witnessed by 100 people this year.
