Mangaluru: As the High Court’s stay on the demolition of the Central Market Building, which was being run by the Mangaluru City Corporation, was lifted, the building demolition has begun and will soon be razed down to the ground.

On Saturday April 30, the operation was carried out throughout the day. The operating agency will handle the building waste too. The Central Market Building where vegetables, and fruit were being sold has a history of about 62 years.

Another building was selling fish and meat. Some parts of this building got dilapidated and then it was decided in a meeting of the MCC held on June 20, 2016 to construct a new market building under the Smart City Project.

The approval was obtained at the Smart City Board meeting and the approval was given at the committee meeting held on September 22, 2018, after which the tender process was over and the PPP partnership was finalised. On April 4, it was decided to stop business activities in the market and demolish the old building. The work was stopped on May 29 last year after some traders got a stay order from the High Court and now the MCC has resumed operations after the court vacated the stay order.
