New premises of ‘Snehalaya’ inaugurated

Mangaluru: The new premises of ‘Snehalaya’, a rehabilitation centre for the mentally challenged was inaugurated at Pavoor Bachalike on Thursday, November 5. Puttur MLA, Shakuntala Shetty inaugurated the new premises.


Bishop of Mangaluru diocese, Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, blessed the new premises.

Addressing the gathering MLA Shakuntala Shetty said, “We should inculcate human values and help the needy instead of being selfish.” She lauded the kind service rendered by Joseph Crasta.

Mangaluru Bishop who presided over the function said that it is more important as to what we give to the society. “There are many people who are suffering from various problems. There is no one to listen to their cry. We should bring happiness in their life”, he said.

Founder and managing trustee of ‘Snehalaya’ Joseph Crasta along with Parish priest of Bela Mother of Sorrows Church Fr Vincent D’Souza, Pakshikere church priest Fr Andrew Leo D’Souza, Pavoor church priest Fr Aloysius, Talapady church priest Fr Nelson Olivera, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy president Roy Castelino, Mangaluru Mayor Jacinta Alfred, president of Brahmashree Narayanaguru Vedike, Krishna Shivakripdialyaisa, Abdul Rauf Puthige of Talent Research Foundation, U K Group president UK Yousuf, Tulunadu Rakshana Vedike president Yogeesh Shetty and several other guests were present.

Managing trustee of ‘Snehalaya’, Joseph Crasta, speaking on the occasion said, “‘Snehalaya’ is providing selfless service in taking care, treatment, and shelter of mentally challenged persons, destitute, orphans and abandoned by the society from last six years.”

“Over a hundred people, including two from Nepal, have started a new life after being cared for by the center. Currently, there are 75 people residing here. In addition, our centre has been providing free lunch to about 200 people every day at the Kasargod government hospital. From the last four months, we also have been supplying free lunch to about 700 patients at Wenlock Hospital Mangaluru,” he added.

On the occasion, Rahamatulla from Mangaluru, Abdul Rauf Puthige and Major Stany Mathew, were felicitated for their continuous support towards ‘Snehalaya’. Bishop of Mangaluru Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza was also honoured by the organisation.

Fr George Crasta proposed vote of thanks. Muhammed Rafiq and A B Kuttiyan compered the programme.
