Mangaluru: The ‘No Horn Day’ initiative by Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath completed one year on Tuesday, December 10.
It can be recalled that a year ago, Kamath had implemented this initiative with the intention of reducing the disturbance and noise pollution experienced near hospitals, schools, colleges and other institutions. To this end, Kamath had called on the bus owners’ association, rickshaw owners’ association and other associations to join hands in making one day a week, ‘horn-free’. This initiative was received well by the public.
In the first week of the initiative, drivers and riders were given a rose and requested not to honk for one day in a week. Students also joined the initiative.
Kamath had distributed stickers that read ‘No Horn Day’ to all the rickshaw, cab and bus drivers.
Involving educational students, especially students, he had also organized a meeting and had requested the students and teachers to put the stickers on their vehicles.
Kamath said, “This initiative was launched last year in order to reduce noise pollution caused by horns. We had urged the people of the city through various social media platforms to join hands with us. Even though we had decided to make the route from Collectors Gate, Balmatta to Hampankatta a ‘No Horn Zone’ by requesting the traffic police, nothing paid off, except that the public supported the initiative. This initiative was launched to spread awareness among the public about the ill-effects of noise pollution. This should be understood by the people, only then can we build a clean, beautiful and healthy city.”
“We are in need and look forward to more public support for the initiative. If the people understand the purpose and implement it in their day-to-day life, noise pollution can be controlled,” he added.
