Mangaluru: Taking a leaf of lesson from the acute drought that took Mangaluru city into its tentacles, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada has decided to stop usage of Nethravati water for agriculture purposes so as to give emphasis on drinking water from January onwards.
DC Dr K G Jagadish has said that the ones violating this instruction will have to face criminal cases. He said that last summer had thrown Mangaluru into dire straits due to water paucity. Keeping this in mind, 5 mts of water will be stored in the new vented dam.
With regard to the new vented dam, he said that the survey work has been completed and the list of families affected by the project has been compiled.
Meanwhile, the farmers whose land will submerge due to the new vented dam boycotted the meet called for by the DC, on Saturday. They said that the administration was unilaterally making decisions without taking the farming community into confidence.
The people who waited for the DC at the Inspection Bungalow were raged when they came to know that the DC headed to inspect the new vented dam cancelling the meeting scheduled with them.
