Mangaluru: On Wednesday December 15, the Popular Front of India (PFI) criticised the arrest of its leaders by Uppinangady police on “false charges” and the use lathi charge against “peaceful protestors.”
Speaking to mediapersons PFI said that Uppinangady police had arrested three of its leaders without giving a reason and were keeping them in custody without proof, and that they had been peacefully protesting since Tuesday morning.
Despite police provocations, PFI said its protests were peaceful throughout the duration of the protest. “Around 9.30 pm, the police approached the protestors from behind and attacked them without notice or provocation. Many people were beaten in the head, showing the police’s barbaric nature,” PFI said.
PFI has demanded that the “false cases” against its leaders be dropped immediately and that they be released. They also claimed that the police were fabricating a story to escape responsibility. PFI has demanded an impartial probe and strict action against the officers who ordered a lathi-charge on protestors. On December 17, the PFI has announced a march to the Mangaluru SP’s office.
