Mangaluru: The Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district, on Sunday, December 22, demanded that a judicial probe be conducted into the police firing which claimed the lives of two people on Thursday.

Durin a press briefing, Committee president K S Mohammed Masood told mediapersons that the committee will not settle for any probe other than a judicial inquiry. “There are certain guidelines to be folly before clamping a curfew and resorting to opening fire. However, the police violated all these norms, fired at unarmed protesters and killed two innocent people. Meanwhile, several others, including students, were also injured in the police firing. We want a judicial inquiry into the incident so that the bereaved families get justice. We settle for any probe other than a judicial inquiry,” he stressed.

Masood also demanded the maximum compensation for the kin of the victims. “The Government should look after the education expenses and other expenses of both the families as they are from a poor financial background,” he said.

Former MLA MohiuddinBava, who was also present, clarified that no outsiders were present during the protest, contrary to the police department’s claims. “Let them show video evidence as proof that outsiders were involved in the protests,” he said adding that none of the injured persons were from outside the city.

Protest against CAA and NRC on January 4

Masood also informed that the committee would organise a massive protest against the CAA and NRC on January 4. “We had previously decided to hold a protest on December 28. We then decided to organise the protest on January 4 as the Christmas and New Year celebrations will be over by then. We are staging a protest because the Government has excluded the Muslim community from the CAA and the commoners are unable to furnish all the required documents for the NRC,” he said.

Committee members Kodijal Ibrahim, Mumtaz Ali, Rafiuddin Kudroli, Imthiyaz and others were present.
