Mangaluru: Amidst prohibitory order being imposed in the city, some organisations staged a massive protest which turned violent after a few miscreants pelted stones towards police and public property, which led the police to lathi charge them in order to bring the situation under control on Thursday, December 19.

Though Commissioner of Police Dr P S Harsha cautioned of taking strict action against protesters who hold protests without obtaining permission from the police department, some people gathered near State Bank area and began to shout slogans against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), and the BJP-led union and state governments. Despite police asking them to move away from the location, they denied to budge and instead, intensified their protest.

Following this, police were forced to lathi charge the protesters so as to disperse them. Meanwhile, miscreants also pelted stones towards police and public property while damaging several vehicles in the area. Several police and public were injured in the incident.

The incident led to traffic congestions in most of the areas within Mangaluru. Police detained many for questioning in this regard and several police officials have been deployed at key areas to prevent any such untoward incidents.

Meanwhile, a member of the web media, Ismail was lathi-charged by the police. According to sources, Ismail was hit by the police while he was clicking photos of the scenes unravelling in front of him, even after he showed them his ID card. It is alleged that the police snatched away his ID card and handed it back to him only after other media persons spoke in his favour.

It is also being said that the police even fired in the air to disperse the protesters gathered.

More details are awaited.
