Mangaluru: The road works that have become a hot topic for debate recently, has sparked a war of words between Dakshina Kannada District Youth Congress president Mithun Rai and Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath.

Rai accused MLA Kamath and the BJP-ruled Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) of being a “Tughlaq Darbar” as they took up a several road development works at the same time, causing traffic chaos in the Hampankatta area and other parts of the city.

Speaking to the media here, Rai urged the district administration to solve the problems faced by the people owing to the unscientific development works being taken up by the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) and Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). “The BJP-led MCC has been spending the taxpayers’ money lavishly. They either lack the practical experience or are spending the money because there are sufficient funds. All the roads are being dug up without any planning, causing great inconvenience to the people,” he said.

“The people may face more difficulties in the next few days as many works have been taken up simultaneously,” he added.

Former MLA J R Lobo, who was also present, said that district Deputy Commissioner K V Rajendra should intervene immediately and solve the issue.

Responding to Rai’s comments on the issue, MLA Kamath accused the Congress government of running a “Tughlaq Darbar” over their 70-year rule.

“Many of the Congress’ projects have been non-starters. They laid the foundation stone to build an apartment complex for 930 homes for the poor in Shakthinagar, which was a non-starter. The land on which the project was proposed to come up was a deemed forest land. Without ensuring that there are sufficient funds for the Kadri and Kankanady markets, the Congress government laid the foundation stones for both the projects. The construction work for both the markets have stalled now,” he said.

He also pointed out to the time when a large number of people in Bengre were issued title deeds without land surveys.

Speaking about the work underway in Hampankatta, Kamath said, “Even though te ongoing road work has inconvenienced the citizens, we are making sure that they are not inconvenienced too much. The development work in Hampankatta has been due for the last 20 years. We, therefore, had to replace the old water line and drainage network. We will expedite the work and try to finish it in record time and the work in Car Street will be completed by the end of November.”

He then urged the people to have patience and cooperate.
