Mangaluru: Indian Navy vessel INS Talwar, carrying 40 metric tonnes (MT) of liquid medical oxygen filled in cryogenic containers, arrived at New Mangalore Port on Wednesday May 5. Following this there was a controversy stating that the government is taking credit for an action which was done by the Indian Red Cross Society.

Clarifying on this matter, MLA Vedavyas Kamath said that the Red cross is part of the government itself. “The Red Cross in the district is headed by none other than the DC who is a government official,” he said. He further stated that the President and the Prime Minister all are included in the Red Cross Committee. “The request for oxygen was made by the government itself, and mediated in the name of the Red Cross so that it can be done systematically,” he added.

He further said that those who have started these rumours are not aware that the Red Cross is part of the Government itself. “They are spreading false rumours because they are jealous that the Indian Government has done this,” he added.

Director for Environment at Indian Red Cross Society, Karnataka State Branch, Yathish Baikampady said that the government and the Red cross worked hand in hand to bring this consignment to Karnataka. He said that the process was mediated by Red Cross, but the request has been made by the government itself. “The tankers which were brought in will help to meet the supply chain demand which is increasing in the state,” he stressed.

According to the information given in their webisite, Indian Red Cross Society(IRCS) was established by the government under the Indian Red Cross Society Act and incorporated under Parliament Act XV of 1920. The President of India is the President of the society and the Union Health Minister is the chairman. The managing body is responsible for governance and supervision of the functions of the society through a number of committees.
