Mangaluru: Taking a green initiative, the new western teaching block of the National Institute of Technology, Surathkal (NITK) and 1-MW grid connected roof top solar power plant at the institute will be inaugurated on Saturday, November 11. The 14th annual convocation of NITK will be held on the same day at its Srinivas Nagar campus.
The new four-storey teaching block constructed on the western side of the campus will have a state-of-the-art senate hall with 500 seats, 12 postgraduate classrooms and 10 graduate class rooms. NITK had signed a power purchase agreement with Clean Max Enviro Energy Solutions, Mumbai, through Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). As many as eleven blocks of the institute have been installed with 1-MW grid connected rooftop solar power plant. NITK will purchase power generated from the rooftop plants on a levelised tariff for 25 years.
The use of solar energy will help NITK save Rs 5 lakh monthly on electricity expense which generally runs up to Rs 40 lakh.
