Mangaluru: Demanding implementation of the M S Swaminathan Report, the federation of farmers’ associations in Dakshina Kannada district is planning to stage a huge protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on January 3.

The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene State Secretary Ravikiran Poonacha told reporters here on Monday, December 31, that though the BJP was voted to power nearly five years ago following its assurance of implementing M S Swaminathan report, nothing has been done so far.” As the production cost of crops is more than the prices available in market, the government should fix a support price on all the crops as mentioned in the report”, he said.

Pointing out the assurances which were given prior to the Lok Sabha elections of 2014 by BJP, Ravikiran said, “The leaders of BJP including Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised that the farmers’ loans would be waived off and all necessary measures would be taken to provide proper price to their crops. However, instead of favouring the farmers, the union government has been appeasing the corporate companies. If the government does not meet the demands of the farmers, BJP would be taught a befitting lesson by us in the next Lok Sabha election”, he said.

Leaders of various farmers’ associations Yadav Shetty, Manohar Shetty, K Krishnappa Salian, Shekh Abdullah, Vasudev Uchil among others were present.
