Mangaluru: A unique protest “Aranya Rodhana”, condemning the deforestation in the name of various developmental projects in the Western Ghats, was organised by the Sahyadri Sanchaya on January 26, near the DC’s office.
The protesters also urged the people to vote for “NOTA” against the politicians responsible for the Yettinahole project and deforestation in the district in the upcoming assembly elections.
All the protesters masked their faces and raised slogans against the state government for felling several trees in Padil to make way for the new DC Complex.
Addressing the gathering, leader of Sahyadri Sanchaya, Dinesh Holla said that in the name of the Yettinahole project, several trees had been felled. “Even for the construction of the DC Complex in Padil, several trees have been uprooted. The state government, by introducing various projects which hampers nature, is turning this fertile land into a barren land.”, he lamented.
“Despite there being repeated wildfires in the Western Ghats, the government is not planning to prevent this and save them. The mafias have taken the Western Ghats into their clutches. If the government fails to take proper action against the destruction of the Western Ghats, the people in the district will face serious consequences”, he feared.
