Moodabidri: Thousands of people came out in the open in support of Kambala, considered as a sport in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district and the procession culminated at Ontikatte Kadalakere Nisargadhama on January 28.The procession began at Swaraj Maidan and proceeded towards Jodikere paddy fields. Thousands of activists setting aside political affiliations joined the procession. People from different organisations, religious leaders, politicians, film stars and college students marched along in support of Kambala.
Statewide movement for Kambala gained momentum as the people demanded ban on People’s Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) opposing the sport. In united voice, they demanded the state government to bring out an ordinance to save Kambala which has an emotional connect with the people living in coastal districts.
People blew trumpets, shouted slogans and buffalo owners added flair to the Jatha when they marched with 150 of their animals along the procession route.
Moodabidri Kamabala Samithi President MLA Abhayachandra Jain ,MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, former ministers Amarnath Shetty and Vinayakumar Sorake, BJP leader Jagadish, JDS leader Ashwin Pereira, Diwakar Shetty and Congress youth leader Mithun Rai took part in the Jatha in support of Kambala.
