Solar power for all govt buildings in Mangaluru: Nalin Kumar Kateel

Mangaluru: The first review meeting of the committee formed for the supervision of proposed projects, Integrated Power Development Scheme and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grama Jyothi Yojana (DDUGJY) was held at the DC’s office on Saturday August 1.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel presiding over the meeting said that a committee has been formed as per the direction of the Secretary of Energy Ministry of India. The committee has been asked to hold meetings every three months.

The IPDS project is proposed to be implemented only in the town limits, includes Mangaluru, Bantwal, Puttur, Ullal, Moodbidri, Mulky, Belthangady and Sullia towns. The project aims at providing HVDS solar panels, UG cables, Feeder pillar box, prepaid and smart meters in government offices etc. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 68.13 crores and the report has been sent to central Energy Ministry for the approval.

The DDUGJY project meant for rural areas includes Mangaluru, Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur and Sullia taluks. The purpose of the project is to convert HT Feeders into agricultural and non-agricultural feeders, installing capacitors, high voltage distribution system, upgrading power substations etc. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 405.66crore.

Balpa and Kenya villages have been added in the Adarsha Grama Yojane. For the new 33/11kv power distribution centres in Sampaje, Surya, Yedapadau and Machchar, land has been sanctioned, said a MESCOM official at the meeting.

Mangaluru south MLA J R Lobo who was present at the meeting suggested installing UG cables. Also, all the flats and institutions should compulsorily made to put up solar panels, he added.

Nalin Kumar said that entire Dakshina Kannada should have solar panels, including all the government offices. 3800 families in the district which have no electricity should be given priority in the first list of the project. Even smaller areas such as Banjarmale, Malige Mane and Yelaneer will be provided with solar energy. As it comes under the forest department, the work has been delayed, he said.

He assured a discussion with the DC and other concerned persons about the technical issues before implementing the projects.
