Belthangady: ‘Swacha Bharath-Swach Shradha Kendra’, a cleanliness initiative of Sri Kshethra Dharmasthala has bagged outstanding response across the state. The initiative has drawn the attention of Minister for Muzrai, who has said that the same model will be implemented in all the temples across the state.

veerendra hegde 1Addressing the reporters on Saturday, Sri Kshethra Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade said that the campaign has bagged outstanding response and going by the same, each and every religious place across the state will open its door as a new, clean centre on January 14.

Dr Heggade, who visited the Nethravathi ‘Snanaghatta’ (bathing area) near Sri Kshethra Dharmasthala tried talking to the devotees there, telling them why it is necessary to maintain cleanliness in a religious centre.

“It was an eyesore to see devotees discarding clothes, coconut, turmeric-vermelion, paper plates and cups etc on river banks near the bathing area. Lot of nuisance is caused in the name of ritual and culture. This kind of behaviour is certainly not acceptable in religious places. The whole idea behind the campaign is to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in all pilgrim centres including Dharmasthala,” he said adding that cleanliness is a part of Godliness and if the sanctity of a religious place has to be restored then cleanliness in and around that place has to be restored.

Dr Heggade said that five days ago he had visited Hubballi Sidharuda Math and temples in the surrounding areas and tried to convince the temple and Math authorities about maintaining cleanliness in the vicinity.

Dr Heggade said that plastic continues to be one of the biggest menaces in temple. “There has been no effective alternative to plastic, but however, in Dharmasthala temple, prasadams are now being packed in paper packs. Plastic bottles are used to give away prasadam in liquid form, but efforts are on to do way with plastic completely,” he said adding that outstanding response has come from Masjids and Churchs as well.

Sri Kshethra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project has 18,000 groups under it and each and every volunteer of these groups are bound to perform ‘shramadana’ under the cleanliness campaign.
