Mangaluru: It was a Feast for eyes when 6000 odd Degree and PG students from St Aloysius College (Autonomous) wearing colorful uniforms marched together as one family, carrying messages on social issues such as Anti Dope, Environment protection, Salute to Soldiers, Change education system, Freedom of Speech etc. This was at the inaugural ceremony of the 139th Annual Athletic Meet at the city’s premier educational institution. Israr Pasha who represented the nation at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship and Asian Championship led the march past.
Dr. Gerald Santhosh D’Souza, Assistant Director of Physical Education, Mangalore University was the chief guest and inaugurated the Athletic Meet by hoisting the flag. Former Mr. World Raymond D’Souza was the guest of honour and received the Athletic Meet torch.
Dr. Gerald Santhosh D’Souza in his inaugural speech recognised and appreciated the good motive of the students in presenting social messages during the march past. “This Athletic Meet is more like a get together where participation is an achievement in itself. I myself have a lot of personal experience here in this institution as an alumnus of this college. Only a few excel in any event but actually winning is excelling against oneself. Today is a symbolic day, don’t wait till one more year to come on the ground, instead make it a habit. Be a sportsman, practice every day, be a fit citizen” he said.
Rector of St Aloysius Educational Institutions Rev Fr. Dionysius Vas, SJ in his presidential address said, “It’s very encouraging to see the sea of students participating in this Athletic Meet. Sports begin with desire and continue with determination and dedication. Many students come with a desire to become a sportsman to the SAC sports facilities and with their determination and dedication I am sure they will be achievers. To encourage sports in our institutions a new sports policy has been prepared. The whole idea is to promote more sports stars from the institutions and to bring more laurels to the college.”
During the occasion, the renovated Gym, Badminton court, basketball court and Vermibin Unit were inaugurated by the guests.
Principal Rev Dr. Praveen Martis, SJ welcomed and Athletic Meet coordinator Precilla D’Silva proposed the vote of thanks.
