Mangaluru: Close on the heels of protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019 carried out without permission from the police department, Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Dr P S Harsha has cautioned of serious action against the organisers of such protests.
Addressing the reporters here on Wednesday, December 18, Harsha said that the police department will allow protests if an association approaches the police department and secures prior permission, based on certain conditions.
“Recently an organisation had organised a protest and blocked the road, disturbing the free flow of traffic and also causing inconvenience to the public. They neither took permission nor did they inform the police department prior to the protest. A total of 38 people were arrested in this connection and the same action will be taken against anybody who dares to hold such protests henceforth,” he said.
Speaking about a poster being circulating on social media informing about a massive protest on December 20 and 23, Harsha said that so far, no organisation has approached the police department for permission to hold these protests. “We have contacted the leaders of some of the organisations, as well as the religious leaders whose names have been mentioned in the poster. They clarified that they are not holding any protests on the mentioned dates. It is, therefore, evident that some people are attempting to hamper the peace of the district under the pretext of holding protests against CAA. However, the police department is committed to carrying out its duty and won’t allow anybody to disrupt the peace,” he stressed.
DCP (Law and Order) Arunangshu Giri was also present.
