Surathkal toll plaza gets functional

Surathkal: Much to the dismay of the locals, the toll plaza at NITK-Surathkal started functioning from Sunday night. People at the toll plaza stopped vehicles individually, directing them to pay the toll amount from Monday onwards, also informing the commuters of options of monthly passes etc.

It may be recalled that the toll plaza had been opposed by the locals stating that there was no need for one near NITK while one toll plaza is being set up at Hejamady.

The Surathkal toll gate was to start functioning long ago, but due to various reasons the collection could not take off then.
It may be recalled that on September 20, 2015 Congress leader including local MLA Moideen Bava had protested against the toll plaza.

Later on, a heavy vehicle passing through the toll plaza had pulled down the ceiling bringing down the entire establishment. The locals had then raised finger at the unscientific and poor construction standards.

On August 7, the state high court had dismissed a petition filed by Suratkal Nagarika Samithi against the construction of the tollgate. The court had also ordered police security at the place. Now it has been learnt that amid police security, the collection has started from Sunday midnight.

The district administration had itself said that the toll plaza at Surathkal may add to the traffic snarls as the capacity of handling vehicles at the Toll plaza is restricted.

However, with the toll plaza jump starting fee collection one may only have to wait and watch as to what the traffic situation in the region is going to look like.
