There won’t be any water scarcity this summer: Mayor Diwakar

Mangaluru: “The water impounded in the Thumbe Vented dam is sufficient to meet the requirements of the residents of Mangaluru city and there will be no scarcity of water this summer,” said new Mayor Diwakar Pandeshwar on Monday, March 9.

He was speaking after offering ‘Bagina’ as part of the ‘Ganga Pooja’ to river Nethravathi at the Thumbe vented dam. Diwakar said, “The inflow of water into the Thumbe vented dam is still there and the city will not experience any water scarcity this time. Providing drinking water is the responsibility of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and we are committed to doing the same. We expect the cooperation of the Opposition party to provide basic requirements of the people, including drinking water.”

An official of the MCC informed the media that water inflow had stopped completely at the end of the month of February, last year. “But, this year, the inflow of water continues and this is a good sign,” he added.

Opposition party leader in the MCC, Abdul Ravoof said that the Congress party will extend its complete support to the ruling BJP in fulfilment of the people’s drinking water needs.

MCC joint commissioner Dr Santhosh Kumar, superintendent engineer Ganeshan, executive engineer G K Muralahalli, assistant executive engineer Naresh Shenoy, Chief Whip of MCC Premananda Shetty, corporators Shashidhar Hegde, Lancelot Pinto, Naveen D’Souza, Poornima, Sumithra Kariya and others were present.
